Stefan Edberg and Steffi Graf, last year’s losing finalists, will be the top seeds in the French Open tennis championships starting next Monday.

Sweden’s Edberg lost to American teen-ager Michael Chang at Roland Garros last year while West Germany’s Graf was upset by Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain.

Chang, who has been in poor form on clay in Europe this year, is seeded 12th, while Sanchez Vicario is seeded third behind Monica Seles of Yugoslavia, the surprise winner Sunday over Graf in West Berlin.

Although there may be withdrawals before Friday’s deadline, today’s seedings go along with the ATP rankings among the players entered.

Boris Becker, ranked No. 3 in the world, was seeded No. 2, followed by Andre Agassi of the United States and Andres Gomez of Ecuador.

Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, the three-time French Open champion and No. 1 player in the world, is skipping the tournament to prepare for next month’s Wimbledon.

American Aaron Krickstein, Spaniard Emilio Sanchez, Austrian Thomas Muster and Soviet Andrei Chesnokov were seeded Nos. 5 to 8, respectively. Muster beat Chesnokov in the final of the Italian Open on Sunday.

In the women’s seedings, Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina is fourth, followed by American Zina Garrison, Manuela Maleeva of Switzerland and Mary Joe Fernandez of the United States.

If John McEnroe, ranked No. 11, plays in the French Open, he will be the No. 9 seed. However, he has withdrawn from his last three clay court tournaments and may pull out of the French Open before the Friday deadline.
