TUSTIN : 9.4% Pay Increase for Teachers OKd

Share

The Tustin Unified School District board on Monday approved a contract agreement that includes a 9.4% salary increase for the district’s 430 teachers.

Under the new contract, salaries for entry-level teaching positions will be $23,730, with $49,065 as the maximum teacher salary. In 1989, comparable salaries were $20,000 and $40,000. The new contract is retroactive to July 1, 1989.

Increases in the second and third years of the contract would depend on the availability of state funds. However, the contract states that Tustin teachers would receive up to a 1% salary increase if their salaries do not rank in the top five of the 12 unified school districts in Orange County.

Monday’s vote follows Friday’s acceptance of the contract by the Tustin Educators Assn., which had been embroiled in a bitter 10-month labor dispute with the district.

During the contract dispute, some teachers protested stalled talks by not assigning homework and refusing to participate in extracurricular activities.
