The Laguna Beach City Council has taken an official stance in support of the embattled National Endowment for the Arts and plans to write to congressional leaders this week expressing support for continued funding of the federal arts agency. Several conservative politicians have objected to NEA funding of allegedly obscene or sacrilegious artworks, and at least one, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a Republican whose district includes parts of Orange County, has called for elimination of the NEA from the federal budget. The Laguna council’s action, taken at the urging of the city Arts Commission, adds to the growing list of arts groups and other institutions in Orange County formally voicing support of the NEA.
