Body of Missing Hiker Found in Steep Ravine

The body of a missing 74-year-old hiker was found Tuesday morning at the bottom of a canyon in the Angeles National Forest about five miles north of Glendora.

Sgt. Larry Curry of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s said the man, whose name was withheld pending notification of his family, apparently died from a fall into a steep ravine.

Deputies said the man and a 63-year-old companion had been hiking in the Williams Canyon area above the East Fork of the San Gabriel River Monday afternoon when the two decided to separate. When the older man failed to return as scheduled, the younger man notified sheriff’s deputies.

A helicopter crew that was aiding a 16-member search-and-rescue detail on the ground spotted the body at 7:25 a.m.
