THE SIDELINES : Courier Leads U.S. to Victory
Jim Courier defeated Carl-Uwe Steeb, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, and then helped in a doubles victory today as the United States beat defending champion West Germany, 2-1, in the $1.3-million ATP World Team Cup tournament.
Boris Becker provided the only West German victory, overpowering Brad Gilbert, 6-1, 6-1. Courier and Ken Flach beat Becker and Eric Jelen in doubles, 6-2, 6-2.
Spain defeated the Soviet Union, 2-1, on singles victories by Sergi Bruguera and Jordi Arrese.
The United States and West Germany have 4-2 records after three days of the competition.
