Memory Chip Glut Predicted: Japanese producers have been boosting production of DRAMs, or dynamic random-access memory chips, leading to a possible oversupply later this year rather than the shortage that had been widely anticipated, said analyst David Angel of the market research firm of Dataquest in San Jose. DRAMs are common silicon chips that are used widely in computers and cost about $7 to $8 apiece. Prices for 1-megabit DRAMs peaked in 1989 at about $17 during a worldwide shortage.
