Soccer fans in Florence, Italy, angered by the sale of a star player, planned to firebomb the training camp of the Italian World Cup squad, investigators reported.

Meanwhile, the training center of Coverciano, where the squad is preparing for the World Cup, remained closed to the public and armored police trucks patrolled the area.

Fifty people were injured and 15 arrested Friday when Florentines attacked the headquarters of the local club, then clashed with police. The incident followed the sale of Roberto Baggio, the 23-year-old star forward of Fiorentina and of the national team, to rival Juventus of Turin for a reported $13 million.

Ezio Barbieri, a member of Florence’s city council, demanded a brief suspension from his job because his son David was among the arrested fans.
