Until the city acquired the property in the mid-1960s, this wooded park was the site of a privately owned horse ranch. Many of the trees that once shaded the ranch grounds make up what is now a several-acre picnic area.

“The only thing we had to add was picnic tables and barbecue pits,” said park director Richard Gonzalez. “It’s been a beautiful area long before it was being used for a park.”

At the back of the park, there are several sports facilities. While other San Fernando Valley parks focus on sports for elementary school children, the Granada Hills Recreation Center offers an extensive program for teen-age girls and boys. Although sports for younger children are available, there is an emphasis on teen-age teams in softball, baseball and volleyball.

From June 29 to July 1, the park will sponsor its fourth annual Latin Music Festival, which will include Latino food, arts and crafts, live Latino entertainment and rides. Proceeds from the festival go to the City of Hope.
