Noriega Loses; UCSD’s Sargeant Wins NCAA Hammer Title

Jose Luis Noriega, a University of San Diego sophomore ranked sixth nationally, lost to No. 3 Steve Bryan of Texas, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA men’s individual championships at Indian Wells Friday.

Noriega, who defeated 42nd-ranked Mike Brown of Arkansas, 6-7, (9-7), 6-0, 6-2, in the third round Friday, became an All-American for the second time by advancing to the quarterfinals.

Noriega had defeated Bryan earlier this year in the final of the DuPont Intercollegiate National Claycourt Championships in South Carolina.

TRACK AND FIELD

UCSD’s Scott Sargeant easily won the hammer with a throw of 193-6 at the NCAA Division III Championships in Naperville, Ill. John Paul Smith of MIT was second with 179-2.

Shannon Quigley, the defending women’s champion in both the shotput and discus, placed second in the shot with a throw of 45-9 1/4. Stephanie Bostwick of Wisconsin Oshkosh won at 47-1. Quigley will compete in the discus finals today.

The women’s 400-meter relay of Yvette Marzullo, Erica Washington, Vicki Dunckley and Michelle Milledge finished third with 48.47.

The women’s team, which is six points out of second place with 20, has a good chance of bettering last year’s fourth place with six competing in today’s finals.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh leads with 44 points.

The Point Loma Nazarene College men’s team is third after 10 events at the NAIA Championships at Stephenville, Tex. Azusa Pacific leads with 43 points and Wisconsin Parkside is second with 36. PLNC has 25 points.

Goshu Tadese placed second in the 10,000 meters in 31:05.18 behind Rick Robirds of Adams State (31:01.71).

Alicia Harasty was the PLNC women’s only place-winner Friday, finishing seventh in the heptathlon with 4,380 points. Wendy Simmons of Graceland won the event with 5,312.

GOLF

UC San Diego’s Mike Reinhardt finished in a tie for 22nd as the NCAA men’s Division III golf championships were completed at Jekyll Island, Ga.

Reinhardt shot a final-round 79 for a four-day total of 303, tied with Lance Holbert and Chuck Calcagni of Rochester and 14 strokes behind medalist Rob Pilewski of Methodist. Devin Thomas shot a 307 for UCSD, and Bob Knee shot 309.

UC San Diego finished 10th with 1,235 strokes. Methodist won with 1,172.

The San Diego State men’s team moved up a place to seventh with a score of 569 after the second round of the NCAA West Regional Golf Championships at University Golf Course, Las Cruces, N.M. Arizona State is in first with 555. Tim Todd of SDSU shot two-under-par 72 and has a score of 138, putting him in a four-way tie for fifth going into today’s final round. Jim Furyk of Arizona and Hub Goyen of UNLV are tied for first with 136.

SURFING

John Siberell of Cardiff and Trevor Christ of Encinitas are among the first sixteen qualifiers in the Men’s Main Event of the $40,000 Body Glove Memorial Week Surf Classic at the Imperial Beach Pier. Competition continues today beginning at 7:30 a.m.
