Schroeder Victor in Three-Quarter Midget Main Race
Gary Schroeder of Burbank edged Page Jones of Rolling Hills to win the 20-lap United States Auto Club Western States Series Three-Quarter Midget main event before 2,225 at Ventura Raceway on Saturday night.
Schroeder had just enough power to get past leader Jones, the son of 1960 Indianapolis 500 winner Parnelli Jones, on the front straightaway on Lap 8 and held on to nip Jones by two car lengths. Jay Drake of Valencia took third.
The victory also moved Schroeder into a tie with Ricky Gray for the most USAC main event career wins at 12.
Sleepy Tripp of Costa Mesa won the 30-lap USAC Midget main event.
Midget 10-lap heat race winners were Robby Flock of the City of Industry, Tripp, Hank Butcher of San Leandro, and Gary Howard of Anaheim.
Flock’s 10-lap heat race victory took only 2 minutes 10 seconds, breaking the Midget 10-lap record time on the one-quarter-mile dirt oval of 2 minutes 17 seconds.
