Brazil’s Aryton Senna broke his own qualifying lap record on the streets of Monte Carlo to win the pole position for today’s Formula One Monaco Grand Prix.
In earning the 45th pole of his career, Senna went out for only six laps, twice breaking 1 minute 22 seconds, and led the field with a best-lap time of 1:21.314 in his McLaren-Honda. That lap bettered his 1:21.797 at Thursday’s first qualifying session.
Senna averaged 91.55 m.p.h. on the twisting 2.068-mile street circuit in the seaside principality.
