Top-ranked UCLA used an error to score two runs in the first inning, then held on to beat Oklahoma State, 2-1, Saturday before lightning and threatening weather prompted the suspension of play at the NCAA softball World Series.

An elimination game between Oklahoma State and Fresno State was stopped with no score after nine innings.

Tournament officials said the game would be resumed this afternoon.

After that game, UCLA will play Florida State. The remaining games will follow.

UCLA’s win over Oklahoma State gave the Bruins a 3-0 record in the tournament and improved their season record to 60-6.

UCLA loaded the bases against Dena Carter (23-6) in the first inning, then scored both runs when Yvonne Gutierrez reached on a throwing error.

Oklahoma State put runners at second and third with none out in the seventh against Heather Compton (17-1).

Lisa Longaker then came on in relief and picked up a strikeout. A single by Shannon Kimberling scored one run, but pinch-runner Dani Pfeiffer was thrown out at the plate. A popout by Donna Forman ended the game.

Earlier, Fresno State eliminated Cal State Long Beach, 2-0, and Florida State knocked out Nevada Las Vegas, 4-1.
