From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

Pops Staples and the Barrett Sisters, two of the biggest names in gospel music, will perform this weekend at the Chicago Gospel Festival.

Staples, the patriarch of the Staple Singers, helped define the crossover of gospel music to mainstream with the hit “I’ll Take You There.”

Staples, the youngest of 14 children, and his group got their first job in 1948 in New Orleans and have been singing the joyful sounds ever since.
