WORLD : Ceausescu Illness Delays Trial
Nicu Ceausescu, son of Romania’s executed dictator, is seriously ill with a progressive liver disease, his defense lawyer said today at his trial for genocide.
The military tribunal adjourned until June 25 after Nicu’s lawyer, Paula Iacob, said he should have neuro-psychiatric tests.
Nicu, 38, faces life imprisonment if convicted of the charge that he was responsible for the killing of 89 demonstrators in Sibiu during last December’s uprising against Nicolae Ceausescu.
Nicu was stabbed in the abdomen shortly after his arrest and underwent an operation. He appeared gaunt and weary during the four days of the trial.
