Santa Monica : School Funding Studied

The City Council and the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s Board of Directors held a joint meeting Tuesday to discuss means of funding for the financially ailing school district. The district reported recently that it will need $3 million to maintain current programs.

City staff will study the fund-raising proposals made at the meeting, which include imposing higher utility taxes and adding a surcharge to water bills. Staff will come back to the council June 12 with recommendations.

Board members said that if Malibu gains cityhood, it too will be asked to contribute funds. The members said Santa Monica money would not be used to fund schools in Malibu.

Mayor Dennis Zane told board members that the city will find the additional funding. “These are essential needs,” he said. “The city has an obligation. . . to come through with significant resources.”
