Young Musicians Get in Tune for Benefit Show

Sibling violinists Leslie Liang, 5, and Erik Liang, 7, of Irvine (above, with Judy Johnson) will be among the 400 young musicians in the Orange County Youth Celebration of Music benefit concert at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa.

The program will include works by Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart and Schumann, among others, plus folk melodies and jazz selections.

Groups appearing will include the Saddleback Symphony, conducted by Barry Silverman; Corona del Mar High School Orchestra, conducted by Harry Corea; Irvine High School Stage Band, directed by Stan Steele; Magnolia High School Symphonic Winds, led by John Hausey; and the Santa Ana Winds, conducted by Robert Ward.

The event was organized by Newport Beach resident Merle Valdez, who has been teaching music in Orange County for 35 years.
