* Donald B. Best, an officer with the Bassett Unified School District Police Department, has been awarded a certificate of recognition for extraordinary personal action by the East San Gabriel Valley chapter of the American Red Cross.
On Nov. 30, 1989, Best was flagged down and asked to assist Latecia Fields, who was about to give birth in her West Valinda home. Fields’ daughter, born with her umbilical cord around her neck, was turning blue from lack of oxygen. Best unwrapped the umbilical cord, cleared the airway and stimulated the baby’s breathing.
