Checkpoint Charlie, the most famous crossing through the now-crumbling Berlin Wall, is going to be dismantled, the U.S. military said today.

“Plans are in motion for the eventual removal of Allied Checkpoint Charlie. We will announce the date of the ceremony and the disposition of the building when a final decision is made,” said a statement from the U.S. Command Berlin.

Capt. Pete Pierce, spokesman for the U.S. military, said he could not confirm German news media reports that the checkpoint will be taken down this month.

“No decision has been made on the date,” Pierce said.

German officials have said they will end all passport and identity card checks at the Berlin Wall next month, when the West German mark officially replaces the East German currency and the two countries start to merge their economies.
