David L. Newman Goes Pops: After a six-month search, David L. Newman has been named the music director and conductor of the Los Angeles Pops Orchestra. His stint will begin during the summer season. Newman has composed the score and conducted for more than 20 films and television programs, including “War of the Roses,” “Throw Momma From the Train” and “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.” His plans for the orchestra include a concert version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel,” with opera singers performing the arrangements from the show’s film version by his late father, Alfred Newman.
