P. M. BRIEFING : New Cuts at General Dynamics
General Dynamics plans to make its largest round of employee cuts so far this year with elimination of up to 800 jobs in coming weeks, company spokesmen said in a published report today.
The cutbacks are the latest in a series of work force reductions at the company which builds military jets, the Dallas Times Herald reported. The company announced long-term plans in April to eliminate up to 7,000 employees from a work force that numbered about 32,000.
About 450 General Dynamics workers have been laid off since company Vice President and General Manager Charles Anderson said the shrinking defense budget would necessitate long-term cuts in the work force.
Even after the planned layoffs, with more than 30,000 workers remaining, General Dynamics still would be the largest employer in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.
