NATION : Woman Dies in Lift Bridge Fall
A woman panicked and fell to her death from a horizontal lift bridge when it began to rise as she walked across it, police said today.
The 50-year-old woman was either leaning over or trying to jump from the rising bridge and fell several feet before she was caught in part of the bridge’s superstructure Sunday, authorities said.
“She screamed, ‘Help me! Somebody help me, please!’ ” said Noelle Nelson, who watched helplessly from the deck of a nearby restaurant. “She must’ve thought the bridge was going to dump her.”
The woman was walking on the bridge when a bell sounded, signaling the bridge was about to go up. The bridge had risen 30 to 40 feet when the women fell.
Authorities are withholding the woman’s identity until relatives can be notified.
