Solidarity leader Lech Walesa rejected an offer to lead a new centrist party, saying that taking such a position would unfairly throw off a balance among new political parties in the country. “I am a supporter of the center,” Walesa said after a meeting in Gdansk with a 20-member delegation from the new Center Party, led by his aide Jaroslaw Kuczynski. “I cannot be linked with you, because the center would be too strong,” he said.
