A study of drug abuse among San Jose State athletes led to the firing of football Coach Claude Gilbert and uncovered problems among players in other sports, authorities said.
A confidential report, prepared by Heitzinger and Associates and sent to then-athletic director Randy Hoffman Oct. 5, 1988, became public this week.
According to Hoffman, the report warned that football players had admitted taking amphetamines before games. It also said three players admitted using steroids.
