Countywide : Panel to Seek New College Chancellor

Share

The Ventura County Community College District board of trustees has voted to form a committee to search for a replacement for Chancellor Barbara Derryberry, who is retiring in 1991.

The board voted 4 to 1 to form the 20-member screening committee. Trustee Tom Ely voted against the proposal, arguing that the committee was too large to be effective.

The committee will include faculty, administrators, community members and one student from each of the county’s community colleges in Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura.

Members will screen applicants, rank them and present the board with a handful of finalists.

The board of trustees will conduct final interviews and make the section by June, 1991.

Board members said they wanted representatives on the screening committee from each employee group that will come in contact with the new chancellor, including clerical and custodial workers.

The chancellor’s duties include implementing board policy, supervising management personnel, overseeing contract negotiations with district employees and representing the district in Sacramento.

Derryberry, who announced her retirement last month, will remain with the district until June, 1991.

An attorney who has served as chancellor since 1988, Derryberry has worked for the district for 20 years in several roles, including as business instructor at Ventura College and as the district’s vice chancellor for personnel and affirmative action.

In her remaining year as chancellor, she will act as a consultant to the district in looking for her replacement.
