WORLD IN BRIEF : PHILIPPINES : Aquino Calls Halt to Mail-Order Brides

President Corazon Aquino signed a bill outlawing the Philippine mail-order bride business, a practice she denounced as a form of “exploitation in utter disregard of human dignity.” The measure makes unlawful the advertisement, publication, printing or distribution of any brochure, flier or material promoting the solicitation of Philippine women for marriage to foreigners. Aquino said many of the victims are young women from remote villages lured by “sweet talk and grandiose promises.”
