CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SAN JOSE : Battered Wife Gets Probation in Killing
Declaring that in “good conscience” he could not send her to jail, Superior Court Judge Edgar Taylor sentenced a battered wife to five years’ probation for the fatal shooting of her husband. Terry Shapiro, 26, pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter in the slaying of her 42-year-old husband, Abe. After he had beaten her the night before, the woman said, her husband rose the next day and threatened to “end it all” by using his bare hands and watching her suffer. She got one of her husband’s guns and shot him five times.
