TENNIS ROUNDUP : Garrison Struggles a Bit but Advances in England
Top-seeded Zina Garrison defeated France’s Catherine Suire, 7-5, 6-2, in the second round of grass-court tournament Wednesday at Birmingham, England.
Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, seeded second, defeated Cecilia Dahlman of Sweden, 6-3, 6-2, to advance in the warmup event for Wimbledon.
It was Sukova’s first appearance at this event, and her victory lined up a third-round match with West German Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, Sukova’s former doubles partner.
No. 14 Betsy Nagelsen ousted Britain’s Jo Durie, 7-5, 6-2. Others moving into the second round were Gigi Fernandez, Ros Fairbank, Larissa Savchenko of the Soviet Union, Lori McNeil and Anne Smith.
Amos Mansdorf of Israel defeated eighth-seeded Dan Goldie, 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, at the Continental Grass Court tournament in Rosmalen, Netherlands.
Swede Henrik Holm defeated Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 6-4. Srejber eliminated top-seeded Yannick Noah of France in the first round.
In other matches, fifth-seeded Richey Reneberg came back to defeat Michael Stich of West Germany, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
And another Swede, David Engel, had little trouble defeating Jeff Tarango, 6-1, 6-2.
Lawson Duncan of the United States and Tomas Carbonell of Spain had straight set victories of a clay-court tournament in Florence, Italy.
Duncan, seeded 16th, beat Diego Perez of Uruguay 6-3, 6-1. Carbonell, seed 10th, beat Haiti’s Ronald Agenor 6-3, 6-0. In other matches, Aki Rahunen of Finland defeated Argentina’s Alberto Mancini, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
