FOOTNOTES : Argentine Goalie Has Surgery

Share

Argentine goalkeeper Nery Pumpido, who broke his right leg in a World Cup victory Wednesday night over the Soviet Union, underwent major surgery and will be sidelined for up to six months.

The 45-minute operation repaired a total fracture of the tibia and fibula. The goalie will spend two or three days at the hospital and then be flown to Argentina.

Pumpido, 33, was carried off the field on a stretcher after colliding with Soviet striker Oleg Protasov during a save attempt in the 10th minute.

In 1987, Pumpido had a gruesome accident in training. As he leaped for the ball, his wedding ring caught in a hook on the crossbar and almost ripped his finger off. Surgeons reattached the finger, and he was back training within two months.
