‘Prairie’ Home Closes Down: Money problems have forced the World Theater, former home for Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” to lay off 10 of its 12 full-time employees. Employees of the elegant, 76-year-old former vaudeville show house in St. Paul, Minn., were informed Wednesday of the layoffs, which are effective on different dates through July 15. Of the theater’s full-time employees, only director Patrick Ruble and operations manager Ken Schumacher will remain. The theater was left without a show when Keillor left St. Paul about a year after it reopened in 1986. The theater will no longer present programs under its own auspices, but will continue to be available for rental, theater officials said.
