Paint Firms Say Air Rules Actually Add to Pollution

Share

A lawyer for a group of paint companies has urged a judge to lift restrictions on how paints are mixed, saying that the regulations imposed by a regional air quality agency only create greater pollution.

Twenty-one companies, including Dunn-Edwards, Ameritone and Sinclair, filed suit in March alleging that the South Coast Air Quality Management District failed to properly assess the potential harm to the environment in adopting the restrictions as part of a sweeping clean air package. William Smiland, the attorney for the companies, said Thursday that the regulations erode the quality of paints because they require manufacturers to alter the composition of their products in such a way as to dilute their strength, making extra coatings necessary.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Yaffe scheduled additional arguments July 16.
