Powell Posts Back-to-Back Ventura Wins

Jim Powell Jr., 17, of Cypress drove to his second consecutive Street Stock 15-lap main-event victory at Ventura Raceway on Friday night.

Powell passed Don Green of Ventura on Lap 13 after Green, who had led the entire way, went high in the turn.

Powell came from the 11th starting position to win his third main event of the season. Green finished second and Don Keeter of Ventura took third.

Chris Raschke of Ventura improved his Mini Stock season points lead with a hard-fought victory in the 20-lap main event. The win gave Raschke his fourth main-event victory of the season, a high for all divisions.

Rock Ake Jr. of Moorpark and Pat Garrety of Oxnard finished second and third.

In his first victory of the season, Russ Warren of Ventura led wire to wire in the Mini Stock four-lap figure-eight main event, holding off a hard-charging Cory Kruseman of Ventura, who finished second. Joe Silva of Port Hueneme was third.

Jim Firsich of Port Hueneme took over the season points lead in the Street Stock figure-eight division with an easy 10-lap main event victory. Green was a distant second and Scott Olsen of Ventura finished third.

Six-lap heat-race winners were Lynn Brader of Somis in the Street Stock division and Gary Curtis of Camarillo and Ake in the Mini Stock division.

Mike Bryan of Ventura won the four-lap Street Stock trophy dash and Raschke won the Mini Stock six-lap trophy dash.
