A retired Air Force colonel and a college professor about to wrap up a 48-state peace tour were killed Friday when their single-engine plane crashed short of an airport runway, officials said.

Retired Air Force Col. Frank Martineau, 69, of Bethesda, Md., and Marjorie Zeuch, 67, of Warwick, R.I., also were trying to set a speed record for flying a single-engine plane to all capitals in the contiguous 48 states.

Charleston was their next-to-last stop before winding up the trip at Washington National Airport in Virginia.
