From Times staff and Wire reports

About a thousand convicts barricaded themselves in a riot-torn Ukrainian prison and took up positions on the roof after police tried to evacuate the rioters. Two inmates have reportedly been killed in the four-day-old riot. The Dnepropetrovsk prison, one of the largest in Europe, holds both convicted criminals and suspects, including women and teen-agers. The riot reportedly started after some women prisoners screamed that they were being beaten.
