Midfielder Michel scored the first three-goal hat trick of the World Cup to lift Spain past South Korea, 3-1, Sunday night.

Michel shot Spain ahead in the 24th minute with a hard right-footed volley off a setup by Francisco Villaroya.

He scored the winner in the 62nd minute with a curling free kick from outside the penalty area into the corner of the net, then capped his memorable night in the 81st minute with a close-range shot after beating two defenders.

Hwangbo Kwan had tied it at 1-1 in the 43rd minute with a drive from 30 yards.

The victory made Spain 1-0-1 in the tournament. Its other game was a scoreless tie against Uruguay. South Korea also has lost to Belgium.

Spain appeared to be in complete control after Michel’s opening goal, which came off an accurate cross from Villarroya.

Roberto came close to making it 2-0 in the 30th minute, but goalkeeper Choi In-young made the save from point-blank range.

South Korea evened the score when Choi Soon-ho tapped the ball sideways on a free kick from 30 yards and Hwangbo kicked a curling shot that went into the net past the dive of goalie Andoni Zubizarreta.
