Share

The Orange County Transit District on Monday approved a budget of $184.4 million that includes the addition of 110 positions.

The majority of the positions are for bus drivers and maintenance workers being added to keep pace with the increase in ridership, which has gone up 40% in the last 2 1/2 years. The OCTD board recently approved the purchase of 39 buses.

The budget, for the 1990-91 fiscal year, also includes $31.6 million to design and purchase land for the Santa Ana Freeway transitway, a network of car-pool lanes separated by barriers from the other lanes. Construction on the transitway, which will stretch from the interchange with the Orange and Garden Grove freeways to the Costa Mesa Freeway, could begin as early as next year.
