Robinson’s department store has been declared structurally safe by city officials despite a nearly disastrous incident Friday at the University Towne Center shopping mall.

A concrete-and-steel awning 35 feet above the store’s west entrance crashed to the sidewalk, slightly injuring one person and narrowly missing several others.

A Robinson’s official, who asked not to be identified, said the store is safe and there is no reason for people to be afraid of shopping there.

Robinson’s has been ordered to conduct a structural survey of the building in University City, constructed in 1977, to determine the cause of the collapse, said Pete Lopez, structural inspection supervisor for the city of San Diego.

The city building inspection office expects the results of the survey late this week or early next week from an engineering firm hired by Robinson’s, Lopez said.
