The chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. was in satisfactory condition at a Santa Fe hospital today after being injured in a horse-riding accident at his ranch near the state capital.

L. William Seidman’s Washington office said that he underwent surgery late Wednesday to repair a separated pelvis and that his doctors reported the surgery was successful.

A nursing supervisor at St. Vincent Hospital would not release any information other than Seidman’s condition.

He had come to New Mexico to speak to the New Mexico Bankers Assn. and to participate in an FDIC management conference in Santa Fe. His office said he was making an overnight visit to his ranch before returning to Washington.

Seidman has said he plans to retire June 30 from his twin jobs as head of the FDIC and chairman of the Resolution Trust Corp., the agency created by Congress to rescue the savings and loan industry.
