El Segundo Superintendent to Leave Post

El Segundo Unified School District Supt. Richard Bertain will leave the district July 31 for Washington, where he will become associate director of ACTION, the federal agency that coordinates national volunteer programs, including Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).
Bertain, 59, came to El Segundo as an assistant superintendent in 1978, becoming superintendent three years later.
Bertain said that after a 33-year career in education, which he began as a teacher in San Diego, he is looking for new challenges. He likened his new job supervising volunteer programs to education because “both are in the general area of serving people.”
School board President Alan Leitch called Bertain “a great liaison between the community and the board” who will be “sorely missed.” He praised Bertain’s financial skills in helping the district through a decade of financial problems and encouraging more than $500,000 in donations from a community educational foundation.
Leitch said the board will begin a search and expects to name a new superintendent in three months.
