From Times wire services

The Pentagon asked Congress today to cancel 68 U.S. military construction projects totaling $327.4 million, most of them in West Germany, and continued a worldwide freeze on $6.7 billion in other projects.

Spokesman Pete Williams said more recommendations for cancellation will be made by Defense Secretary Dick Cheney later as the military moves to address shrinking budgets.

“Don’t assume this process is done. There’s more to come,” Williams told reporters.

The 68 projects, ranging from fireplaces for officers quarters to schools and aircraft shelters, were earlier approved and funded by Congress. Now Cheney is asking that they be canceled before they are started.

Only three of them are in the United States and most of the remaining are in Western Europe, including 42 at bases in West Germany totaling over $150 million.
