SHORT TAKES : Racists’ Show Runs on Cable TV

Officials for an Indianapolis cable television company said it is obligated by its charter to broadcast a program produced by a white-supremacist group in California.

The show, “Race and Reason,” is being aired by Comcast Cablevision of Indianapolis as part of its public-access programming. Executives said that as long as the program is not pornographic, the cable company must provide open access to the public. But one group targeted by some topics on the 13-week series has expressed concern.

“I think it’s unfortunate that the values celebrated in the film ‘Race and Reason’ would find a sympathetic audience anywhere in America--and scary that someone thinks there’s an audience in Indianapolis for this,” said Marcia Goldstone of the Jewish Community Relations Council.

The show, which is shown at 4:30 a.m., was produced by Tom Metzger of Fallbrook, Calif., a leader of the White American Political Assn.
