GM Recalls 1.6 Million Cars: General Motors recalled all 1.6 million 1984-90 Chevrolet Camaros and Pontiac Firebirds because of possible seat-belt defects. The company said ultraviolet solar rays could weaken the seat-belt buckles’ red release buttons. The latching mechanism then may not hold the seat belt in place, which could make the safety device inoperative. In time, GM said, seat-belt buckle assemblies on all the affected cars will be replaced or repaired for free.
