ENVIRONMENT : Bush Urged to Act on Warming
A task force of state governors called on President Bush today to quickly implement a consensus report calling for action now to deal with global climate warming, the so-called greenhouse effect.
Led by Gov. James Thompson (R-Ill.) they reported that Bush seemed more receptive than in the past to consider changes in U.S. policy and to exert leadership to persuade the rest of the world to join in combatting global warming.
The report, issued on behalf of the National Governors’ Assn., said action is needed to stabilize emissions of gases said to contribute to global warming, to develop an international agreement to protect the atmosphere and to use extensive reforestation programs to reduce the effects of climate change.
