NL Old-Timers Turn Back AL, 3-0
Hall of Fame outfielders Lou Brock and Enos Slaughter combined to produce the decisive run in the first inning Monday night as the National League beat the American League, 3-0, in the ninth annual national old-timers’ baseball game.
The NL has a 6-3 lead in the series, which benefits indigent ballplayers and their families.
Leading off the game, Brock got tripled off the right-center wall against Bob Feller. He scored when Slaughter, batting second, grounded to second.
Don Kessinger and Gene Mauch started the NL second with singles off Camilo Pascual. Charley Neal doubled to score Kessinger and Mauch scored on Andy Pafko’s fielder’s choice grounder.
Consecutive two-out singles in the second inning by Willie Horton and Earl Battey off Tom Seaver constituted the AL’s major threat in the game, but pinch-hitter Gene Woodling grounded out.
