County Official Testifies Against Amnesty Cuts
President Bush’s proposed $1.1-billion cut in federal reimbursements for education and social services for newly legal immigrants would cost Los Angeles County $200 million and force a 40% reduction in county funding of public hospitals, a top county official said Wednesday.
Testifying before a Senate subcommittee, Virginia A. Collins, head of the county’s state and federal programs division, was one of several state and county officials who urged full funding of the State Legalization Impact Assistance Grants. The program, which was part of the sweeping 1986 immigration act, helps finance welfare, health care and educational training programs for illegal immigrants who are granted amnesty.
