GOLF / STATE AMATEUR : Boyns, Johnson Out in Opening Round
Defending champion Casey Boyns of Pacific Grove and medalist Mark Johnson of Oxnard were among the first-round casualties Wednesday as match play in the 79th annual California Golf Assn. State Amateur got underway.
Boyns was beaten, 4 and 3, by reigning Southern California Golf Assn. Amateur champion Paul Stankowski. Johnson fell to 1982 state champion Gary Vanier of Oakland, 6 and 4. Vanier is one of two former champions still in the field. Terrence Miskell, the 1986 winner, also won twice. Vanier was two-under-par for the day on the 6,799-yard, par-72 Pebble Beach Golf Links. In the afternoon, Vanier eliminated Bob Imlay of San Diego, 6 and 5.
Stankowski also was two-under-par for the day even though he was playing Pebble Beach for the first time. Stankowski defeated David Berganio of Sylmar, 6 and 4, in the afternoon.
Miskell, of Salinas and Fresno State, second to Phil Mickelson of Arizona State in the NCAA tournament earlier this month, beat Craig Anderson of Fallbrook, 3 and 2, and Ron Ewing of Merced, 2 and 1.
Patrick Duncan of Rancho Santa Fe defeated Alan Drobka of Newport Beach, 5 and 4, and Bryan Pemberton of Dublin, 6 and 5, while Ben Furth of San Francisco got past Chris Zambi of Thousand Oaks, 3 and 2, and Todd Demsey of Rancho Santa Fe, 7 and 5.
Charlie Wi of Thousand Oaks beat Mitch Harrison and Randy Bridge of Hollister, both 1-up, and Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys defeated Ducky O’Toole of Carmel, 3 and 2, and Javier Sanchez of Redwood City, 5 and 3.
Sandy Galbraith of Fountain Valley needed 21 holes to beat Paul Holtby of Simi Valley and downed Jack Spradlin Jr., of San Diego, 1-up in the afternoon.
