The Philadelphia Flyers are extending Coach Paul Holmgren’s contract at least through the 1992-93 season, a newspaper reported today.

The Philadelphia Daily News, citing an unidentified source close to the negotiations, said Holmgren’s agent, Steve Mountain, and Flyers General Manager Russ Farwell have agreed on an extension.

Holmgren’s current contract runs through next season.

The Flyers had no immediate comment.

Holmgren, who is on a fishing trip in his native Minnesota, has not signed a contract extension and specific terms of the agreement were not known.

Farwell told the Philadelphia Inquirer on Wednesday that Holmgren’s contract would be extended but Farwell would not disclose the length of the extension.

Farwell became general manager June 6, filling a vacancy left by the firing of Bob Clarke on April 16. Farwell indicated that he wanted Holmgren to stay on to coach the NHL team next season.
