The trend these days is to purchase compact discs after you’ve bought your compact disc player--considered a wise investment over time (if you’re willing to spend top dollar). No more warped records, no more scratchy tunes. Some recording studios refuse to release recordings in LP form, and some store chains no longer stock them.

But music lovers with large investments in turntables--or who have a nostalgic bent--can still buy records locally. In fact, Orange County has a fairly wide selection of stores that sell vinyl. Chains such as Sam Goody and Music Plus still sell 12-inch singles. The Santa Ana Music Plus (2407 S. Bristol St.) has a small selection of records, and Tower Records stores still have a few, although they are not new.

Some shops, such as Music Mart in Costa Mesa and Sound Spectrum in Laguna Beach, although they don’t stock records, will place orders for individual customers.

Die-hard record lovers may still have their day: Condor Records and Laguna Music (see list below) sometimes sell records at half-price.
