Slow-Growth Measure Planned for Ballot
Just two days after a public opinion poll showed overwhelming support for a growth-control initiative in Santa Clarita, a group of residents on Thursday announced plans to place such a measure on the ballot.
The measure is not yet written. Its supporters hope it will slow, but not halt, development in the Santa Clarita Valley, said Marilyn Hathaway, co-chairwoman of the Citizens’ Assn. for Responsible Residential Initiative on Growth, or CARRING.
The slow-growth initiative has been in the works for months and is not a response to the opinion poll released Tuesday, Hathaway said. But she said the poll’s findings have encouraged members of her organization.
The association will try to rally public support for a slow-growth initiative at a forum scheduled for July 9 at Santa Clarita City Hall.
In the opinion poll, commissioned by the city, 78% of the respondents favored a measure to clamp down on growth in the rapidly developing Santa Clarita Valley. The poll was based on telephone interviews with 414 valley residents and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
