The Chargers Thursday announced the signing of third-round draft choice Jeff Mills, an outside linebacker from Nebraska.

Mills, 6-feet-3 1/2 and 238 pounds, is the first of 17 Charger draft choices to sign. He was the first of three Charger picks in the third round, the 57th player selected overall.

Charger General Manager Bobby Beathard said he hoped signing Mills would help speed the signing of the Chargers’ other third-round choices--offensive tackle Leo Goeas of Hawaii and wide receiver Walter Wilson of East Carolina.

Beathard said Mills signed a series of three one-year contracts plus an option year. Financial details were not released.
