BRACE YOURSELF: We’ve heard of great double bills, but how ‘bout this for a pop odd couple--Billy Idol and . . . Tom Jones! No lie--the two pop sex symbols performed a series of impromptu wee-hours duets at Spice last week. Still walking with the aid of a cane, Idol took the stage with Jones, singing “Got to Be Your Lover,” “Great Balls of Fire” and “Babaloo.” . . . Idol also performed last weekend at the gala wrap party for “The Doors,” Oliver Stone’s film chronicling the rise and fall of rock icon Jim Morrison. Accompanied by Doors drummer John Densmore, Idol performed “Road House Blues” and “L.A. Woman.” Speaking of Densmore, his autobiography, “Riders on the Storm,” is due from Delacorte Press in early September. . . . Meanwhile, Mick Fleetwood has just finished up his autobiography, “Fleetwood: My Life and Adventures in Fleetwood Mac.” Written with Stephen Davis, the book is due out in November from William Morrow & Co. . . . It was a treat hearing Frazer Smith back at doing what he does best--running a morning radio show. (When KLSX-FM’s regular morning man fell ill, Smith--who normally holds forth Saturday nights--took over the station’s morning shift last week). Smith poked fun at the Knebworth Rock Festival, joked about summer movies and was scheduled to put together a Wednesday double-bill featuring children’s puppeteer Johnny Skunk and notorious comic Andrew Dice Clay. If KLSX doesn’t have plans to give Smith its morning slot, we’d like to know this: Why doesn’t Pirate Radio kingpin Scott Shannon (who’s been saying he’s dying to get out of his morning show obligations) just hire Smith to anchor Pirate’s morning program?
